the CHALLENGE

CDC, in general, has an uphill battle to fight. They have to not only communicate some very difficult concepts to folks in a way that causes them to care, but also not frighten them — lest they be labeled “fear-mongers” once again.

This video project was no exception. We were asked to highlight the warning signs of Sepsis for teachers, coaches and other folks working child-centered careers. I was asked to get these warning signs across in a full animation storyboard of around 1 minut in length It needed to be both matter-of-fact, and approachable.

the Result

Utilizing an existing visual style for the broader campaign (Get Ahead of Sepsis), I put together keyframes, and eventually full storyboards for the provided script. I borrowed some of the Corporate Memphis aesthetics, and the mostly monochromatic corlor palette and illustrated with very specific beats in mind. Upon client approval, I handed those boards off to my friend and frequent collaborator, freelance Motion Designer Ben Windsor to complete.

The CDC staff on this project were extremely complimentary and minimally interested in design changes. An often browbeaten agency these days, that sort of passive scrutiny is quite a compliment in and of itself… They were confident the work was achieving its aims with gusto.
